The Independent Adoption Center is Closed

The Independent Adoption Center is closed, effective January 31, 2017, and is declaring Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

The court will appoint a trustee to administer the bankruptcy estate.  If you are owed any money by IAC, the court will notify you of the case and you will have an opportunity to file a Proof of Claim for any refunds you believe are due to you.

Update: February 10, 2017

Subsequent to filing bankruptcy on February 3, 2017, IAC again reviewed its records and found that there were additional individuals and families entitled to notice of the bankruptcy proceeding. As a result, on February 10, 2017, IAC filed an amended Schedule G, listing 3224 individuals and families who engaged IAC for adoption services, and who are at varying stages of the adoption process.

IAC continues to work diligently with the bankruptcy trustee, and state and private agencies to provide for the appropriate disposition and return of client files.

Update: February 3, 2017

Independent Adoption Center filed Chapter 7 case number 17-40327 on February 3, 2017 in the Northern District of California, Oakland Division. Marlene Weinstein has been appointed Trustee in the case.  If you have been listed as a creditor, you will receive official notice from the bankruptcy court of the case filing, including instructions on how to file a Proof of Claim.  If you have not received notice within a couple of weeks, you may obtain a Proof of Claim form from the bankruptcy court at www.canb.uscourts.gov.  IAC will amend its filings to include creditors who were not listed in the original schedules.  If you believe you are a creditor, file a proof of claim with the bankruptcy court.

We want to express our gratitude to everyone who has helped build families through IAC over the last 35 years. We understand that this is an incredibly emotional time for all concerned. All of our board are themselves, like me, parents who have built our families through open adoption, we understand the anxieties and hopes involved in this process. IAC is committed to cooperating fully with the bankruptcy trustee.
